چکیده

Interaction in teams brings together team members’ knowledge and drives innovation by shaping and reshaping ideas transiting through phases of collaboration. Organisations increasingly rely on teams in the hope that collaboration improves problem-solving or decision-making, especially in highly dynamic environments which require quick and reliable development, sharing, and application of knowledge. This paper investigates small group interaction in distributed, IT-supported teams during synchronous collaboration. It aims to understand the dynamics of interactions by tracing ideas to help improve processes and outcomes of team collaboration. The paper enriches a method of collaboration process analysis with the concept of idea trace, i.e. the aggregation of communication actions related to the same topic. Using idea traces, we suggest an approach to identify phases of collaboration, which are afterwards described with process interaction metrics. The metrics are used to analyse the team’s behaviour shaping development of ideas. The usefulness of the concept of idea trace and of the process interaction metrics is showcased in a case study with six teams of 27 professionals conducted in July 2013 in a medium-sized telecommunication company. The paper contributes to our understanding of collaborative development of ideas and the design of supportive IT to foster team collaboration.

Understanding the Role of Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication in Agile Software Development and Its Effect on Quality

Through inward perceptions, we intuitively expect distributed software development to increase the risks associated with achieving quality goals. To compound this problem, agile software development (ASD) maintains that face-to-face (synchronous) communication attributed to co-location of the development team is a key success factor. The following study explored the relationship between synchro...

Towards Computer-Supported Collaborative Software Engineering

Software engineering is a fundamentally collaborative activity, yet most tools that support software engineers are designed only for single users. There are many foreseen benefits in using tools that support real time collaboration between software engineers, such as avoiding conflicting concurrent changes to source files and determining the impact of program changes immediately. Unfortunately,...

Can Collaborative Software Development Benefit from Synchronous Groupware Functions?

Large enterprise organizations have software development teams distributed over multiple geographical sites. Because of distance, enterprises face challenges which are similar to those that open source software (OSS) projects have experienced in the past. OSS projects overcame the problem of distance through both development practices and Collaborative Software Development (CSD) platforms, whol...

Asymmetric Synchronous Collaboration Within Distributed Teams

Teams performing physical tasks must often be distributed in space, and are often organized hierarchically. This means that systems to support collaboration between members must account for the asymmetry in physical environment, organizational roles, and available technology. Using urban search and rescue as an example, we first describe the factors that cause this asymmetry. We then discuss th...
